Sweetshrub or Calycanthus floridus is a lovely shrub native to the SE USA. Several specimen plants are found in the upper portion of the garden dedicated to Georgia native trees and shrubs used by indigenous peoples. The odd-looking flowers have a scent of strawberries. The Cherokee used a root and bark tea for kidney and bladder ailments. Today the plant is commonly sold in the nursery trade throughout the South and prized for its sweet-smelling spring blooms.
