Mexican Cardinal Flower (Lobelia laxiflora) is a spreading perennial with brilliant red and yellow two-lipped tubular flowers. The plant is not uncommon in the Southwestern US into the Sierra Madre Occidental of northern Mexico. Root teas of L. laxiflora and its close relative L. cardinalis have used for centuries by North American indigenous peoples to treat stomach aches, worms, fevers and headaches. The red flowers of both species are also very attractive to hummingbirds.
