Tagetes lucida (Mexican Marigold, Mexican Tarragon, Pericón). While not widely available through the Georgia nursery trade, this perennial Marigold can be found if you look for it and is a wonderful, neatly clumping addition to the perennial garden. The leaves have a strong anise scent and for this reason it is quite popular in Mexican cooking and as an ingredient to salsas. In pre-Colombian times, the Aztec used the plant in their ritual incense and sprinkled powdered leaves on victims to be sacrificed. The herb along with hot peppers was also added to a cocao-based drink the Aztecs enjoyed, called Chocolatl
